AN THE UNION APPEAL, UNION, MISSISSIPPI, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 1997 PAGE THIRTEEN Choctaw Challengers project goes on display BI OBITUARIES Helen Alexander Funeral services for Helen Alexander were held Monday, February 10 Duffee Baptist Church. Rev. James Stephens and Rev. Terry Goodman officiated with burial in the church cemetery. Ms.

Alexander, 52, died Saturday, February 8 at Laird Hospital. Survivors include: 1 brother, Bill Alexander of Little Rock; 6 sisters, Bernice Huddleston, Daree Kelpatrick, Audrey Strange, and Martha Moore, all of Little Rock, Lyndel Ivey of Quitman and Inez Robinson of East Point, Ga. Stephens Funeral Home of Union were in charge of the arrangements. Mr. Clyde Loper Funeral services for Mr.

Clyde Loper were held Monday, February 10 at Mt. Zion Methodist Church. Rev. Todd Thompson officiated with burial in the church cemetery. Mr.

Loper, 86, died Saturday, February 8 at Newton Regional He was a retired farmer. He was a member of Mt. Zion Methodist Church and a veteran of World War II. Survivors include: wife, Edna Bradley Loper of Union; 2 daughters, Eleanor Wansley of Decatur and Sandra Stokes of Madison; 3 sons, Fran Loper of Winchester, Clyde O. Loper of Union and John L.

Loper of Union; 13 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews and other relatives. Memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Zion Methodist Church. Pallbearers were: grandsons and grandsons-in-law. Barham Funeral Home of Newton was in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Ned E. Chamblee Funeral services for Ned E. Chamblee, 69, were held Saturday, February 8 at Milling Funeral Home Chapel. Dr.

Gayle Pope officiated with burial in the Union Cemetery. Mr. Chamblee died February 6 at his residence in Louisville. He was formerly from Union. He was a grocer and also a World War II U.

S. Navy veteran. He was a member of Poplar Flat Baptist Church in Louisville. Survivors include: wife, Frances Green Chamblee of Louisville; a son, Wayne Chamblee of Clinton; 2 daughters, Janice Ezelle of Union and Janell Slaughter of Pascagoula; 5 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; 2 step-sons, Johnnie Green of Savannah, and Jerry Green of Mantee, a step-daughter, Peggy Smith of Noxapater; 3 sisters, Eloise McMahan of Meridian, Hazel Hudson of Longview, and Lillian Evans of York, a brother, Joe Chamblee of Union. He was preceded in death by his wife Christine and a son, Randy.

Pallbearers were: Jimmy Green, Harry Lee Chamblee, Bobby Joe Chamblee, Chris Ezelle, Paul Wolverton and Eddie Wolverton. Milling Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. Faye Purvis Merritt Funeral services for Faye Purvis Merritt, 63, were held Saturday, February 8 at Barham Funeral Home with burial in Ellistown Baptist Church Cemetery in New Albany. Mrs. Merritt died of heart failure Friday at Newton Regional Medical Center.

She was a retired school teacher and a member of First Baptist Church. She retired from Decatur School System. Survivors include: husband, Gus; daughter, Paula Merrit of Chunky; son, Victor Merritt of Olive Branch; sisters, Mildred Roberts of Ellistown, Frances Bailey of Madison and Jean Costner of Banner; brother, Enoch Purvis of New Albany; and two grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Blue Mountain College in Blue Mountains, MS. Barham Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

During the past four months, Choctaw Challengers from Pearl River, Tucker, Conchatta, Bogue Chitto, Red Water and Standing Pine communities, have exchanged their culture with indigenous people from various countries of the world. This opportunity was provided through the Global Classroom Project, an International Education and Research Network Two projects have evolved the Indigenous Global Art Project and the Special Places Writing Project. Student representatives participated from the following school: Choctaw Tribal Schools, Pullman Washington, Uni New Mexico, Taos New Mexico, Orwell Australia, Bairnsdale Australia, Bangkok Thailand, Budapest Hungary, Ghandi Hungary. Students used various mediums to share aspects of their culture. Students also wrote about their "Special Places Between Earth and The focus of the writings were intended to incorporate issues about preserving "Mother These writings have been published which is currently on display in the Choctaw Central Library Archives.

The display is open to the public thru the month of February from 8:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m. For further information call: Bobby Equine Expo at Dixie National Over 90 vendors will fill 65,000 square feet with every equine related product and service imaginable at the 5th Annual Dixie National Equine Expo that runs in conjunction with the Dixie National Quarter Horse Show. The Dixie National Quarter Horse Show and Equine Expo are produced and sponsored by the Mississippi Quarter Horse Association. The Dixie National Equine Expo will be held February 12-16 at the Trade Mart on the Fairgrounds in Jackson. The show starts at noon on Wednesday the 12th, and will close at 6 p.m.
